The 2009 NASR Driver Development Program was held recently at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. This was the third time NASR has taken our young rising stars of speedway to the AIS for the three day camp.

This year NASR saw a large interest from drivers across the country, with many excellent applications from a wide range of speedway divisions.

NASR Competition Manager, Paul Trengove accompanied the group of drivers to Canberra and was impressed by the drivers fitness, professionalism and willingness to learn about how improving themselves can help improve their racing. Trengove a former Formula 3 and Formula Holden racer, was the ideal mentor for NASR to provide, having three times completed the camp himself under the CAMS banner in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

“This year saw a new group of young speedway drivers being put to the test in areas such as strength, fitness and psychology,” said Trengove.

“I was very impressed with the overall attitude of this year’s group and their willingness to learn about different areas of training and fitness. It was pleasing to see the group take fitness and training very seriously and many of the drivers can see how this helps them out on the race track.”

“It was also pleasing that many of the drivers really enjoyed the psychology section of the program. The group learnt techniques to ensure their mind is focussed and in tune on race day and they can definitely see how this will help them concentrate during racing.”

“During this camp we also added some alternative methods to training and recovery. This included pilates, boxercise, fitball and self massage.”

“It was fantastic to accompany our future speedway stars to the camp and I am really looking forward to watching their careers progress in the coming years,” commented Trengove.

Young NOS Sprint driver Jon McCorkindale really appreciated the opportunity of the NASR program in driving his future racing career. “I would really like to thank NASR for putting their time and effort into us young drivers. I found it very beneficial to my driving career in speedway. Having support like this for our ‘young guns’ is exactly what speedway needs to grow and move forward.”

The program was this year attended by Jamie Bricknell (19, TAS, Sprintcars), James Aranyosi (17, Vic, Junior Sedans), Kris Coyle (18, WA, Sprintcars), Kate Wiese (20, SA, V6 Sprints), Jon McCorkindale (18, NSW ,NOS Sprints), Jordan Biviano (17, NSW, Junior Sedans), Rachel Neve (16, NSW, Junior Sedans).

The NASR Driver Development Program will continue to foster talented young drivers with another camp scheduled for next season. Drivers are nominated by the NASR State Branches and the costs shared between these branches and the NASR National Office providing another fantastic member benefit.

NASR would urge interested young competitors aged from 16 years to keep a watch for information to be released in Spring 2009 for the 2010 AIS Driver Development Camp. For any further information please contact your NASR State branch.
